SA19 - The Mouth is Part of the Body

The condition of the oral cavity can impact the overall health and well-being of an individual. Oral health is generally considered poor among residents of long-term care facilities. This session will discuss how oral health and general health are connected and how prescribed medications can have a direct effect on the oral cavity. Basic oral evaluation will be reviewed, as well as when a patient should be referred to a dentist. Attendees will understand the importance of having a clean and healthy mouth in order to optimize the overall well-being of an individual.

  • Describe the importance of oral health in older adults.
  • Recognize the relationship between oral health and general health.
  • Explain the impact of medications on the mouth.
  • Identify when to refer patients to dental practitioners.
