SA12 - Sleepless in Atlanta: The Challenge of Managing Insomnia in the PALTC setting

Description

This session will begin with a practical clinical overview of normal sleep changes with aging and sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Restless Legs Syndrome, and Periodic Limb Movement Syndrome. Pharmacists will then review the various medications used to promote sleep such as the benzodiazepines, “Z drugs,” melatonin, various antidepressants, and antihistamines, as well as the risks/benefits of each. Finally, speakers will end the session with a review of the evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methods for insomnia as applicable to the PALTC setting.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Recognize the normal changes in sleep with aging.
  • Identify key symptoms of common sleep disorders such as Sleep Apnea, Restless Legs Syndrome, and Periodic Limb Movement Syndrome.
  • Weigh the risks and benefits of various medications used for insomnia.
  • Educate patients and families on non-pharmacologic Cognitive Behavior Therapy interventions for insomnia.
