This session will begin with a practical clinical overview of normal sleep changes with aging and sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Restless Legs Syndrome, and Periodic Limb Movement Syndrome. Pharmacists will then review the various medications used to promote sleep such as the benzodiazepines, “Z drugs,” melatonin, various antidepressants, and antihistamines, as well as the risks/benefits of each. Finally, speakers will end the session with a review of the evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methods for insomnia as applicable to the PALTC setting.
