Description

This session will help identify pain in a cognitively impaired or demented patient and how to approach the management of pain for that type of patient. You’ll learn how to recognize the consequences of untreated or misdiagnosed pain and the importance of effective pain management from a team approach. We’ll discuss how to choose the appropriate pain management strategy utilizing non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions based on risk, therapeutic benefit, disadvantages, and/or side effects. Finally, we’ll describe the key regulatory and legislative challenges that exist in opioid management and how to guide your practice.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Identify pain through pain assessment tools, scales, and measures for a cognitively impaired patient.
  • Recognize the consequences of untreated or misdiagnosed pain and the importance of effective pain management from a team approach.
