SA17 - Ethical Existential and/or Spiritual Care for Persons of all Faiths and Ideologies

This presentation will provide attendees with the ability to honor ethical boundaries while performing competent screening for religious/spiritual/existential needs and preferences, as well as engaging in appropriate interventions and referrals in a way that feels comfortable and honors the needs of patients and families from all backgrounds.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Recognize the importance of including religious, spiritual, and existential care in practice. 
  • Develop comfortable methods of screening for spiritual distress.
  • Apply appropriate ethical boundaries that neither spiritually neglect nor abuse patients and families.
  • Identify appropriate responses and referrals in response to spiritual distress.
