Description

Attendees of this program will receive a clear overview of the obstacles and solutions to improve oral health in post-acute and long-term care settings, from diagnosis to prevention, with an emphasis on an interdisciplinary approach to care. The session will clearly define the oral health care problems facing elders and offer concrete suggestions for providing improved treatment, function, esthetics, comfort and restoration of dignity to the most frail and vulnerable.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess the changing oral demographics in the aging population and how it influences seniors' care in PA/LTC facilities
  • Identify and triage the oral problems for a dependent population and develop treatment and preventive management protocols
  • Review palliative dental treatment care for patients, including those undergoing radiation and chemotherapy
  • Describe the relationship of medications in the oral environment including xerostomia (dry mouth) and the long term effects of xerostomia
  • Develop a model for a successful oral health program for patients in this setting

Brief summary:
The Program will introduce the oral demographics of the acute and long term care facilities and discuss the most common oral problems that affect these frail populations. It will offer solution to providing care and comfort and emphasis ways of overcoming obstacles to access to care.
