Session Description:
Complexity science distinguishes between technical and adaptive leadership challenges. Technical challenges can be addressed through the application of specific expertise or skill, and are often enacted with a rule, or procedure. By contrast, ‘adaptive challenges’ have no obvious single solution, are more difficult to describe, and require shifting norms and behaviors. For example, managing disruptive resident behaviors and reducing staff turnover are examples of adaptive challenges. Novel solutions to adaptive challenges must be allowed to emerge from the interactions of the people in the organization, referred to as ‘adaptive work’. ‘Adaptive leadership’ is the strategies and behaviors that are used to facilitate the adaptive work of others. This session will introduce participants to complexity science and adaptive leadership theory. Data from multiple case studies of nursing homes will be used to describe common adaptive leadership challenges, and the local interaction strategies used in effective adaptive work. Using real nursing home scenarios, small groups will identify technical and adaptive challenges. Finally, a panel discussion will engage participants in considering what adaptive leadership behaviors medical directors might use to facilitate adaptive work throughout their facilities.
