Session Description:
This session will describe elements of a comprehensive palliative care program that specifically address the mental health needs of professional caregivers providing end-of-life care at a long-term care and rehabilitation facility. Through an illustrative case study, the session will demonstrate the contributions of interdisciplinary team members as they provide staff with opportunities for emotional support, validation, and processing of grief. In particular, music therapists and art therapists, as a result of education, training, clinical skill and psychotherapeutic approach, are especially well-prepared to play a critical role in the provision of caregiver support services. Participants will re-conceptualize the potential contribution of interdisciplinary team members and will be encouraged to adapt the model to the unique resources of their own facilities.

  • Explain the palliative care needs of medically fragile children, their families, and the staff who care for them.
  • Identify palliative care programmatic elements that enable staff members to process grief and receive support.
  • Appreciate the multiple roles that music therapists and other creative arts therapists play within an effective model of palliative care.
  • Develop strategies for using existing organizational structure to optimize the use of interdisciplinary team members to meet the needs of staff caring for residents at the end-of-life.
