Session Description:
The CMS Five-Star Quality Rating System has been a publicly used quality indicator since 2008 and included seven new quality measures in 2012, yet few medical directors have a deep understanding of the “root cause” of their facilities’ star rating. This presentation will educate medical directors about the rules that determine the Five Star rating. Areas covered will be how the survey results, specific staffing and quality measures translate into stars. Speakers will demonstrate how the medical director’s knowledge of the star system can be critical in influencing quality improvement and “raising” more stars. Experienced medical directors will report on specific cases and projects that improved star rating and will teach the participant to operationalize quality improvement goals. The area of focus will be the technical aspects of the CMS Five-Star rating, appropriate Five-Star goal setting and Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) approaches to the seven quality measures that influence the Five-Star rating. The seven quality measures include ADLs, falls and restraints, pressure ulcer management, managing moderate to severe pain, antipsychotic use and Foley management.

Learning Objective(s):

  • Describe the CMS 5-Star Quality Rating System.
  • Explain how quality measures influence the CMS 5-Star rating system.
