Session Description: This session will discuss the emerging complication of dementia in persons with longstanding diabetes, postulated pathophysiological mechanisms, a patient-centered treatment approach, as well as screening and diagnostic strategies. The clinical impact of dementia in persons with diabetes as well as to long-term care systems and settings will also be discussed. There will be time for questions and a case example will be utilized.
Describe some of the pathophysiological mechanisms linking longstanding diabetes with dementia.
Utilize a patient-centered approach in the appropriate selection of diabetes pharmacotherapies.
Screen for the presence of cognitive impairment and employ appropriate diagnostic strategies.
Appreciate the significance of hypoglycemia, inflammation and insulin resistance on this complication.
