Session Description:
This session will discuss the emerging complication of dementia in persons with longstanding diabetes, postulated pathophysiological mechanisms, a patient-centered treatment approach, as well as screening and diagnostic strategies. The clinical impact of dementia in persons with diabetes as well as to long-term care systems and settings will also be discussed. There will be time for questions and a case example will be utilized.

Learning Objective(s):

  • Describe some of the pathophysiological mechanisms linking longstanding diabetes with dementia.
  • Utilize a patient-centered approach in the appropriate selection of diabetes pharmacotherapies.
  • Screen for the presence of cognitive impairment and employ appropriate diagnostic strategies.
  • Appreciate the significance of hypoglycemia, inflammation and insulin resistance on this complication.
