Description

By examining the evidence basis for deprescription of various classes of drugs and introducing the audience to an approach to systematically evaluate a medication regimen, this session will offer the PA/LTC health care provider evidence-based but practical suggestions to reduce the medication burden appropriately and deprescribe unnecessary and potentially harmful drugs.

Cases will be presented to illustrate the process of deprescription and allow for interaction with the audience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Consider a paradigm for deprescribing medications commonly used in PA/LTC that may not be consistent with goals of care.
  • List medication classes to address, including proton pump inhibitors and dementia medications, that may be appropriate to deprescribe.
  • Discuss approaches to barriers to reducing polypharmacy in PA/LTC.
