Session Description: Although there are many theoretical constructs for improving care and safety in long term care facilities, Medical Directors are challenged by severe time pressures and competing responsibilities and at times might question the impact they can have on an organization. This session will discuss how seasoned medical directors integrate concepts from industry and hospital settings (such as PDCA, Lean concepts, “just culture,” safety culture) into the daily operations of their nursing homes. The panelists will present cases of challenging situations regarding difficult or high risk residents, quality concerns, "wasteful practices," and cultural or leadership challenges and discuss with each other and with you what works and what doesn’t. Through a focus on solutions tested in diverse homes across the country, the audience will come away with practical and innovative ideas about how to make a difference in their organization.
