This session has been approved for a total of management 1.5 credit hours toward certification as a Certified Medical Director in Long Term Care (CMD).

Session Description:
Many long term care clinicians who tried to ePrescribe in 2010 or 2011 failed due to no communication paths between their electronic prescribing (eRx) software and the long term care pharmacy. Nursing homes and attending physicians recognize the value of ePrescribing for both parties. This session will describe projects to enable integrated/collaborative electronic medication management that meets Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) meaningful use criteria and CMS nursing facility regulations. The session will conclude with a Q&A panel for EHR, eRx, and Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) issues.

Learning Objectives(s):

  • Recognize the regulatory and work flow problems that prevent volume ePrescribing in the Nursing Home
  • Enumerate the benefits to clinicians, patients, and facilities from a functional eRx system.
  • Describe how to integrate Nursing Home eRx activity into a Certified Ambulatory EHR.
  • Discuss the additional hurdles required to ePrescribe Schedule II Controlled substances.
  • Describe the three current CMS incentive/penalty programs and the practical strategies the clinician can follow to successfully participate.
