Session Description: Behavioral disturbances are extremely complex and can occur relative to many situations and conditions in gero-psychiatric patients. For instance, behaviors that are considered aggressive are exceedingly common in patients with Alzheimer's disease, occurring in about 40-90% of patients during the course of their illness. Certain risk factors include environment, stage of dementia, psychiatric diagnosis, comorbid medical conditions and psychosocial factors. This session will discuss a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to addressing behavioral symptoms in patients with dementia.
Describe the difficulty of managing aggression or agitation in elderly patients suffering from dementia.
Recognize the symptoms of agitation building in a patient with dementia, and be able to use strategies presented to combat the situation from escalating.
Discuss the benefits of various behavioral interventions used to manage symptoms of dementia related agitation and aggression.
