Session Description:
As persons with criminal/correctional histories enter long term care, we are in the position of managing the complex interaction of patient rights, the duty to protect our residents, the risk of criminal or exploitative behavior by residents, potentially troublesome visitors (e.g., gang members), expressive and potentially offensive behavior, and the need to provide quality care. This session will discuss concerns, methods of assessment, and ways to manage residents with criminal/correctional histories in long term care.

Learning Objectives(s):

  • Review relevant correctional systems and terminology.
  • Examine the balance of patient rights and risks to safety.
  • Discuss when to restrict rights and try other means to manage inappropriate behavior.
  • Describe the role of the medical director in managing patients with criminal/correctional histories.
