Description

This session will explore various aspects of medication management in nursing facilities. A detailed survey of the Federal regulations governing the use of medications will be presented. Emphasis will be placed on the use and management of psychotropic medications, especially within the context of the May, 2011 OIG study on the use of antipsychotic medications in nursing homes. Suggested approaches, for use by the Medical Director as well as attending physicians, to the appropriate management of such medications will be discussed.


Objectives:

  • Delineate Medication Management as it is regulated in nursing homes
  • Discuss the May 2011 report by the OIG concerning psychotropic drug use in nursing homes
  • Discuss the roles of the Medical Director and physicians practicing in long term care concerning optimizing medication management for nursing home residents
