This session has been approved for a total of 1.5 Management credit hours toward certification as a Certified Medical Director in Long Term Care (CMD).

Session Description:
This session will address medial directors who are interested in expanding their roles in medial direction. Topics with interactive discussion will include the following: leadership and management issues, development and sustaining a person-centered culture change, strategies to deal with physicians who are not compliant with state and federal regulations, risk management issues such as the black box labeled drugs, outreach/marketing for your institutions, and the initiation of successful quality improvement programs. The presenter will also share complex cases that include resident behavioral issues, levels of appropriate care, end-of-life problems, and determination of decision-making ability among residents with dementia. We also will examine an ideal medical director's contract that enables one to more easily expand the medial director's role. Attendees will have an opportunity to share their successes and failures in areas such as moving to a restraint free environment, transitioning to a smoke-free environment, and reducing the use psychotropic medications.

  • Provide examples of difficult medical director issues and how to resolve them.
  • Explain the importance of establishing a contract with the nursing facility that allows expanding the medial director's role.
