Session Description:
This session will discuss several hidden dangers of dementia facing residents in the nursing home setting. It will also review results of nationwide surveys on nursing home policies regarding these issues. Areas of concern in cognitively impaired individuals including smoking, dysphagia, and use of antipsychotic medications in response to the FDA black box warning against use in dementia patients will be discussed. Results from nationwide studies on nursing home policies on these potentially deadly issues will be revealed and known data, assessment tools, and proven interventions for the various risk factors will be discussed.

Learning Objectives(s):

  • Identify the laws and regulations regarding smoking policies in the nursing home demonstrate knowledge of nationwide data on smoking policies, and be aware of the unique dangers of smoking in patients with dementia.
  • Assess dysphagia and learn interventions for management in the nursing home. Learn about nationwide data on policies and develop appropriate policies to prevent visitors of residents with dysphagia providing inappropriate and potentially hazardous foods.
  • Describe the FDA warning on antipsychotic use in dementia patients and identify alternative treatments. Learn about current nationwide nursing home policies on using antipsychotic medications.
