Session Description:
It is reported that nearly five million Americans are diagnosed with heart failure. The prevalence of this diagnosis approximately doubles with each decade of life. Congestive heart failure is a common form of heart failure that develops over time and is commonly diagnosed among the elderly. In this talk, Dr. Heywood will discuss the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of heart failure in the elderly. The talk will also highlight end of life care for advanced heart failure in the elderly.

Dr. Heywood currently serves as the Director of the Congestive Heart Failure Program and Clinic at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California and has published over 120 articles on the topic. He received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois and his medical degree from the University of California at San Diego, where he also completed his residency in internal medicine. Dr. Heywood completed a cardiology Fellowship at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California and spent a year as a cardiovascular research fellow at the Univeristy of Zurich in Switzerland. Prior to his current position, Dr. Heywood worked as Director of the Cardiomyopathy Program and Adult Heart Transplant Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at the School of Medicine.
