Session Description:
This session will discuss managing psychiatric illnesses other than dementia in long term care settings. Attendees will learn to recognize and treat depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and chronic schizophrenia, as well as becoming comfortable with both non-pharmacologic management strategies as well as drug therapies for these conditions. Tips for improving documentation will help with common survey related issues related to psychiatric illnesses.

Learning Objectives(s):

  • Develop personal strategies on recognizing depression, bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and chronic schizophrenia in non-demented residents of LTC.
  • Discuss primary care management of depression, bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and chronic schizophrenia in non-demented residents of LTC.
  • Implement the best utilization of psychiatric consultation and acute psychiatric hospital transfer when managing depression, bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and chronic schizophrenia in non-demented residents of LTC.
  • Describe best practice documentation under OBRA regulations when using medication and non-pharmacologic interventions for management of depression, bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and chronic schizophrenia in non-demented residents of LTC.
