Session Description:
This session will review the spectrum of bone disorders in the elderly with an emphasis on their impact on function and morbidity. The AMDA CPG on Osteoporosis and its approach to care will be highlighted in the discussion. A case-based approach will be utilized to facilitate clinical recognition, laboratory evaluation, and management.

Learning Objectives(s):

  • Describe the pathophysiology and clinical impact of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, Paget's disease, renal osteodystrophy,and multiple myeloma.
  • Determine clinical, laboratory as well as imaging modalities to diagnose bone disorders.
  • Analyze the evidence presented for the benefits of timely recognition and treatment of osteoporosis, osteomalacia.
  • Review and evaluate the evidence for newer therapeutic agents for osteoporosis.
  • Discuss the rational management of Paget's disease and renal osteodystrophy.
