Finucane, MD Disclosure(s): All presenters reported they had no relevant financial relationships to disclose. Session Description: This AMDA Foundation sponsored session demonstrates how one critically evaluates research in order to mitigate undue influence on practice behavior. Through his research on this issue, Dr. Finucane has identified positive-outcome bias—the tendency for reviewers and editors to select studies that report positive findings. Biases may also result from the efforts of pharmaceutical companies to promote their products. These efforts may include supporting biased study designs, controlling access to and analysis of study data, and censoring or"spinning" the results. Potential bias may also stem from conflicts between investigators' duty to conduct research objectively and their desire for professional recognition and financial reward. Come sharpen your skills in critical analysis. Learning Objectives:
Identify the major contributors to bias in research
Describe the nature of the various forms of bias
Recognize potential for bias in research literature and how to avoidbeing influenced
Explain possible steps that can be taken to avoid bias in research
