Description

This session reviews the history and pharmacology of methadone and describes how to initiate and monitor methadone therapy. Dosage conversions from other narcotics will be presented and the unique properties and side-effects will also be discussed. References will be made to the recent FDA warnings and newspaper articles which have been published about this drug. Specific case studies will be presented and there will be discussion with the audience about the cases as well as the dosage conversions.

    Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss the basic principles of methadone pharmacotherapy
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of methadone over the other opioids
  • Explain how to safely initiate and monitor methadone treatment
  • Discuss the equianalgesic conversions of opioids to methadone
