Description

This session provides a case-based approach to managing thyroid dysfunction and using new approaches to insulin therapy. The first presentation will review thyroid function abnormalities and thyroid disorders in long term care patients. A systematic approach to the evaluation and management will be presented. The second presentation will provide an overview of diabetes management as it pertains to the elderly patient. Data supporting improved glucose control with suggestions for patient appropriate use of insulin therapy will also be discussed.

    Learning Objectives:
  • Describe physiological changes and pathological disorders of the aging thyroid
  • Interpret various abnormalities of thyroid function tests
  • Discuss the current standards of care for glucose control as they relate to elderly patients
  • Provide new options for dosing insulin without the use of standardized sliding scales
