This session provides a forum for discussion of the role certification plays in ensuring that practitioners attain a level of awareness and proficiency in communication practices that are critical to efficient operation of quality management systems. The case for standardization of knowledge and skill through the certification process translates into best practices in risk management is examined. Theoretical and practical case examples are presented. Audience participation is encouraged.

    Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the principles on which a certification system is founded
  • Define the risks of poor communication in the long term care setting
  • Explain the standardization of communication skills as a component of certification
  • Make the argument for certification and/or communications training as value to LTC facilities
