B08 - Identifying Oral Health Concerns in Older Adults and More Compromised Patients

Description

This session presents a protocol for providing oral care information to caretakers of patients in a variety of long term care settings. This information will enable caretakers to teach the patients to perform their own oral hygiene care as well as prosthesis care, and to become aware of any oral lesions that may occur.

    Learning Objectives:
  • Identify oral health issues that exist and may impact patients and clients served by health professionals and other staff
  • Integrate a higher awareness about the importance of continued oral hygiene
  • Discuss the integral link between oral and overall good health and the Smiles For Seniors program into the patient’s overall health care regimen
  • Recognize the importance of oral cancer screenings and how to identify potential symptoms, and how to assess other factors that exist which may negatively impact oral health
  • Utilize resources and apply techniques to better serve the oral health needs of older adults
