This session presents a review of the literature supporting the efficacy of therapeutic exercise in the management of three common geriatric syndromes: functional disability, falls, and cognitive impairment. The presenters will describe appropriate prescription of therapeutic exercise including type, intensity, frequency and duration. Strategies for interdisciplinary teams to design, implement and track patients’ responses to physiologically effective and safe exercise programs will also be discussed.

    Learning Objectives:
  • Describe physiological changes resulting from the therapeutic use of exercise
  • Identify the benefits of therapeutic exercise in the management of functional decline, falls and cognitive impairment
  • Describe appropriate prescription of therapeutic exercise including type, intensity, frequency and duration
  • Recognize the role of the interdisciplinary team in implementing a facility-wide exercise program
