This session provides an evidence-based summary of insomnia management geared to the realities of practice in long term care, beginning with an overview of the diagnostic assessment of insomnia. Pharmacological options are considered next with attention to the relative risks and benefits of older drugs, current agents, and non-hypnotics. Behavioral interventions are then discussed, focusing on evidence for efficacy and consideration of feasibility of implementation. The session concludes with a discussion of the practicalities of implementing evidence-based insomnia care in one's facility and includes opportunities for audience members to share their experiences in overcoming barriers and achieving best practices in their facilities.
